Basel is richer by one green oasis. Since last week, the Theater- und Pyramidenplatz in the heart of the city center has been home to a “mobile forest”. With around 350 native plants, the pilot project by the Theaterplatz-Quartier association invites people to take relaxing breaks in the midst of greenery and thus raises awareness for the benefits of green spaces in urban areas. Of course, our BeeHomes and wild bees cannot be missing from this new habitat.
Space for Encounters, Culture & of course Bees
Surrounded by numerous cultural institutions, the Theater- und Pyramidenplatz is transformed from a thoroughfare into a pleasant place to stay in the daily lives of Basel's population. The mobile forest thus creates space for encounters, readings, concerts, or workshops. What absolutely must not be missing from the project, of course, is: wild bees.
Promoting Wild Bees in the City
Wild bees are important pollinators of plants and play a central role in our ecosystem. However, they are threatened, and their habitat is shrinking. In cities, suitable nesting sites and food sources are often lacking. With our BeeHomes on the Theater- und Pyramidenplatz, Wildbiene+Partner wants to send a signal for the promotion of wild bees in the city. The native plant species offer wild bees and other insects food and nesting opportunities. Our BeeHomes perfectly complement this offering and create additional nesting sites for the threatened pollinators.
The cooperation with the Theaterplatz-Quartier association and other project partners shows that it is becoming increasingly important to make our cities greener and more biodiverse. Through pilot projects like the mobile forest in Basel, we can demonstrate that it is possible to create a sustainable and species-appropriate environment for animals and plants even in the city. We are proud to contribute to the project with the BeeHomes and support the promotion of wild bees in the city.
