Place the BeeHome on a sheltered wall, at least 100 centimeters above the ground. An optimal location is a house wall that receives morning sun, meaning it faces northeast to south. You can also place the BeeHome on a solid surface such as a windowsill or a table. Mason bees avoid damp places. Additionally, your BeeHome will last longer if it's hung in a well-protected spot.

We do not recommend hanging the BeeHome on a tree. Firstly, pollen-robbing ants can quickly gain access to the BeeHome, and secondly, the BeeHome would be exposed to shade, moisture, and wind. Wild bees avoid damp and dark places, which would result in them looking for another nesting spot.

Wild bees and their offspring feed on pollen and nectar. By offering native wildflowers or fruit blossoms in the vicinity of the BeeHome, you ensure that the mason bees find sufficient food and at the same time increase the likelihood that they will build their nests in the BeeHome.

Although the females of our mason bees have a small stinger, they hardly ever use it, and it is so soft that it practically cannot penetrate our skin. Above all, mason bees show no aggressive behavior whatsoever: one would literally have to crush the animals by hand to risk a sting. However, a sting would hardly be painful and not comparable to stings from honey bees or wasps. Furthermore, these wild bees are not interested in our food.

You can order the starter population of at least 30 mason bee cocoons of the Red Mason Bee (Osmia bicornis) directly online via MyBeeHome from the beginning of March to the end of May. Please note that you need to register or log in with your email address to do this.
